Ian Williams has an interesting column at Salon.
The American Revolution was not about tea. It was about rum: the real spirit of 1776.Williams has also written a book "Rum: A Social and Sociable History of the Real Spirit of 1776" which is due in late August 2005 from Nation Books.
I am sure that given more space than a column in Salon, Williams will fully discuss the linkages between slavery and rum analyzed in the classic history by Eric Wiliams (no relation) Capitalism and Slavery.
